Committees You Can Join
Resolutions Committee
Purpose:
(a) to develop resolutions to be ratified by Council and submitted to the Annual
General Meeting of the Provincial Council;
(b) to call preparatory meeting(s) of the Association representatives to the Provincial Council of The Manitoba Teachers' Society;
Professional Issues Committee
Purpose:
(a) to co-operate with the Provincial Executive of The Manitoba Teachers' Society, with the Department of Education, with the St. James-Assiniboia School Division and with other similar bodies to study and develop programs in teacher inservice education and curriculum development;
(b) to monitor policies, issues and concerns related to education;
(c) to take appropriate action to present the views of the Association in all phases of inservice education and curriculum development;
.(d) to initiate inservice education and curriculum development programs;
(e) to receive and disseminate information related to education issues;
(f) to nominate the appropriate members to the relevant Association/Division Steering Committee.
Communications Committee
Purpose:
(a) ) to ensure the website of the St. James-Assiniboia Teachers’ Association is maintained;
(b) to promote the St. James-Assiniboia Teachers’ Association through publicity venues;
(c) to promote excellent communication between the St. James-Assiniboia Teachers’ Association Executive, Council and general membership.
Teacher Welfare Committee
Purpose:
(a) to monitor working conditions and to compile proposals to be presented to
the Executive and to Council;
(b) to make recommendations to the Negotiations Committee regarding conditions of employment;
(c) to be responsible for matters such as: pensions, salary continuance insurance,
group insurance, medical and dental insurance, Supplementary Unemployment Benefits plans and daycare;
(d) to ensure that all members are kept informed on benefits available to them, and to ensure that all members are receiving the benefits to which they are entitled.
Negotiations Committee
Purpose:
(a) to study the salaries and other matters pertaining to the collective agreement which may be brought to the attention of the Committee by the Executive, by Council, or by the membership;
(b) to compile proposals to be presented to Council for ratification;
(c) to negotiate a collective agreement with the St. James-Assiniboia School Division
(d) to keep a record of negotiations and of any relevant materials pertaining thereto;
Education Issues Committee
Purpose:
(a) to monitor policies, issues, and concerns related to education; such as: divisional policies and practices, prejudice in the classroom, sexism, stereotyping, leadership skills, and affirmative action;
(b) to receive and disseminate information related to education issues;
(c) to recommend changes in classroom materials, educational policies, and
programs to improve education.
Social Committee
Purpose:
(a) to provide refreshments at meetings as directed by the Executive or by Council;
(b) to initiate other social activities such as curling, bowling, baseball and golf;
(c) to plan a function to honour retiring teachers;
(d) to plan a function to welcome new members;
(e) to be responsible for the Association hospitality at the provincial A.G.M.
Reserve Fund Committee
Purpose:
To carry out the provisions of Article 10.
Equity and Social Justice
Purpose:
The Equity and Social Justice committee will address issues related to safe respectful and inclusive teaching environments, discrimination and social justice.
